It takes a village

There's so many other jobs that I haven't really gotten to talk about, so I thought I'd make a half post on it.

For starters, there's the translators. We have three that traveled from Hoi An... a city in Central Vietnam. There's a few others that came from America and Australia. Now, I didn't make the translator cut, because well frankly my Vietnamese is awful. I can barely carry a conversation, but these women speak amazing Vietnamese! Even then so, imagine how tough it is to know all the medical terms for both languages. It is nearly impossible! Imagine the years of schooling doctors go to, to even to learn those terms. Now, you're expected to know both languages, and specifically terms regarding the heart. Yikes. But they do a great job, and without them, doctors would be playing a mean game of sheraids, gesturing and pointing. I would guess that would not work out so well.

There's also the database team whose job is to document the demographic and medical information of the patients. This data will be gathered so that someone like Mayo can use it to help further medicine. Sounds pretty important right? But certainly it is tough, to get information from one language to the other, to get busy doctors and nurses to fill it out, to make sure it is completed and accurate. I think I've heard someone say once a day that Alicia's job is really hard or the toughest... With no medical background and a sweet Spanish accent I think she manages very well.

There are a few more teams I haven't spent enough time with that I want to learn more about. I want to hang out in the echo lab (where the Cardiologist examine the patients that may need surgery), attend a lecture, and observe in the O.R. I am really excited about the O.R., I'm not sure how squeamish I will be seeing blood and organs...We will soon find out! I think the chances of me passing out are 50/50.
