We're steadfastly planning the Heart To Heart Fundraiser Dinner to raise funds for the 2010 medical mission. As host, HSCV is inviting Cardiostart to Vietnam. Cardiostart is a non profit that conducts medical missions all over the world. This is their second trip where they will again generously give their time and expertise, donate hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical equipment, and also cover their own flight costs. As hosting country, our end of the bargain is to pay for shipment of the donated equipment and provide housing for the volunteers. Seems like a pretty fair trade.
After all, in the exchange, we get to save lives. Last year overall, there were 18 surgeries conducted. Of these surgeries, there was a handful of patients submitted by HSCV, who could not afford it otherwise. HSCV is currently in the process of submitting patients again this year to be considered for surgery.
In addition, we get to advance medical care in a country that is deeply important to many of us! I think of my family in Vietnam, when sickness or ailments happen, I'm always in fear. I'm not quite sure the kind of medical care they will receive. The fact is that the stats for success in heart surgery pales to what happens in the United States. I know with each mission, we can close that gap a little.
